Why Should I Recycle?
Recycling saves energy – In 2005, recycling in Athens saved over 313,030 BTU (British Thermal Units). This is equivalent to saving enough energy to provide electricity to 3,099 households per year.
Recycling conserves natural resources and natural spaces – Last year approximately 60,847 trees were saved by recycling 5,071 tons of paper in Athens-Clarke County.
Recycling reduces pollution – By recycling in Athens, residents and visitors reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 9,239 MTCE (Metric Tons of Carbon Equivalent). This is equivalent to keeping 7,058 automobiles off the road each year.
Recycling provides raw material to industry – In 2005, Athens provided industry with 13,556.85 tons of material. One material that was collected, PETE #1 plastic containers, is remanufactured in Northwest Georgia. PETE (#1 plastic) containers can return to market as carpet fiber.
Recycling reduces the amount of waste going into a landfill – prolonging the life of the landfill - Approximately, 300 tons of trash is disposed in the ACC Landfill every day. Currently, the ACC Landfill has less than 10 years of remaining capacity.
Recycling makes a difference –A campus recycling program demonstrates environmental concern, personal responsibility, community action, and responsible solid waste management practices. Campus recycling programs not only impact campus waste but also impact the surrounding community and the overall waste diversion in an area.

What About Game Day Recycling?
The 2007 Football Season marks the second official effort of the UGA Gameday Recycling program. In an attempt to collect recyclables from tailgaters and dawg fans, the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department and Recycling Division have undertaken the tasks of educating the public about recycling and collecting the recyclable materials produced on gamedays.
This program has received sponsorship from Coca-Cola and represents a significant partnership between Athens-Clarke County, American Stadium Services and The University of Georgia.

Fill them and take them to the nearest recycling bin OR tie bags and leave them at your tailgating site!
